While working on THE NAMING video, which was about my family, I wanted to place it within a larger context. I made requests via the internet, newspapers, radio, and word of mouth, for Armenian-Americans to send me information about their families. I received enough data and stories to fill 15 clear acrylic panels approximately 4 feet wide and 6 feet tall. The panels have an unclear, smudgy sort of look and reflect onto the wall behind them, essentially duplicating their images and information. I wanted an unclear, deceptive sort of a look–nothing about this genocide is clear and the panels reflect that ambiguity. History has not been generous to those who went through the Armenian genocide. The government of Turkey denies that it ever happened, and has worked tirelessly to manipulate the historical record and gain the complicity of other governments in a recreation of history. An installation catalog is available, contact eileenclaveloux@hotmail.com. Click for larger images and information about specific panels. |
